“I never imagined in my wildest dreams that our new boiler would be as fantastic as this!”
– said almost all our Go Heating Repair customers…
just after we completed their new boiler install in Wisbeach!
It can be a confusing time when you need a new boiler. It isn’t like reputable boiler engineers grow on trees and you can hear some horror stories about friends who chose the wrong boiler. Thankfully when you know where to start looking for a new replacement boiler it is actually pretty simple. Go Heating Repair Wisbeach have provided this guide below to choosing your new boiler.
How do I find out how much a new replacement boiler will cost me?
Well if you look for a quote in the right place, then it easy to find. The problem is that many customers compare their situation to those online. And just like looking at symptoms on WebMD you could end up scaring yourself with information overload. Often boiler prices vary quite a bit with some boiler installations being just over a grand whilst others can be almost five times as much. That is a massive gap, how did some people get to pay so little, or even so much?
Well the reason for this is that boiler installation quotes can vary depending on different aspects of the property. To begin with the larger the property the larger the required boiler and the larger the boiler the higher the price. Then there is what heating system is already in place. If this system is rather old then it may need partially replacing or even a complete replacement, both of which will of course bump up the price. For this reason the first price of a grand is probably for a small one bedroom flat which will only need a replacement combination boiler. The second one was for a larger house that may have need a complete heating system replacement.
Really the only way to get an accurate quote is by having a boiler survey conducted. There really isn’t anything to lose as you’ll find out your quote, have a chance to discuss the installation and you aren’t tied in to the install until you finalise the details. Another point to remember is that you could find yourself saving a lot of money with a new A grade boiler, even with the cost of installation. This is because up to half of your energy bills are down to your boiler, according to the Energy Saving Trust. Then having a A rated boiler replace an older G rated boiler you could find yourself saving a lot of money and getting the cost of your new replacement boiler back.
So I understand how to get a quote, but do I really need a new replacement boiler?
Well a sure fire sign that Some Go Heating Repair Wisbeach customers change their boiler when it breaks down. Unfortunately this can put you in a horrible situation. Being left without heating or hot water, especially in the winter, can be a nightmare and potentially dangerous. So it is better to be proactive and have your boiler replaced before it does break down.
However knowing when a boiler may break down isn’t something that is easy to predict without years of training and experience. So the best way for you to find out the state of your boiler is by having a boiler service conducted. Go Heating Repair Wisbeach will gladly do this for you. When you have a boiler service you’ll be given the details of any issues that your boiler is experiencing and the engineer will give you his recommendations. We thought we would detail some of the more common issues below:
A boiler that is beyond economic repair: Boilers that are beyond economic repair are usually getting on in years. They have also probably already had numerous repairs made to them. As a result the boiler is becoming more frail and harder to repair. This means that the amount of repairs that it needs will increase as well as the price of these repairs. The reason for the price increase is that the subsequent repairs will require more work and the parts will become harder to source. And all of these repairs will not really be worth the money because another repair will be needed soon after. In this case the boiler technician is likely to recommend having a new replacement boiler installed rather than continuing to patch up your existing boiler. This is what beyond economic repair means and although the choice is down to you, Go Heating Repair Wisbeach would always recommend having a new replacement boiler installed. An added benefit of getting a new boiler is that it will be efficient than your current boiler which, although expensive to install, will save you money in the long run.
The boiler enters a dry cycle:Boiler dry cycles are an issue where the boiler heats up several times a day when it isn’t needed. This is usually a result of the boiler not being insulated and being installed in a cold area, or that the internal thermostat is faulty. The first point is a sign of an older boiler that was installed before certain restrictions on boiler installation was imposed. When either situation arise your boiler will not be able to read the temperature of the house properly and will believe that the house is colder than it actually is. This then leads it to heating up unnecessarily, and possibly multiple times throughout the day. If this is happening then you could be wasting a lot of money on your heating bills without feeling the benefit. If the fault cannot easily be repaired then it may be best to have a new replacement boiler installed.
A boiler that has a continuous pilot light:Older boilers needed a continuous lit flame to allow it to fire up when it was needed. This lit flame needs a continuous stream of gas to keep it alight. This is actually a large amount of wasted energy, despite it not being a fault with the boiler. Whilst this isn’t something that needs an emergency replacement you could consider replacing your boiler if you would like to save money on your energy bills. Newer more efficient boils do not require a continuous pilot light and could save you a lot of money.
Floor mounted boilers:Ever since the 2005 building regulations act, boilers must have been installed onto the walls of the property. Before this the boiler could have been installed either on the walls or on the floor. The issue with installing a boiler directly to the floor is that it can cause the boiler damage. The floor is colder than the walls and can make your boiler susceptible to boiler dry cycles (see above). As such all boilers must now be installed to the wall. If your boiler was installed before 2005 and is attached to the floor then give Go Heating Repair Wisbeach a call to get it checked out.
Extensions and Renovations: If you making changes to your property, changing your boiler change also add to the value of your property.
How can I justify such a large investment?
Whilst a new replacement boiler is a large investment, but there is some good news: it is possible to get the money back. Yes that’s right you can easily net yourself a free boiler. This is a result of the possible savings that you will make on your energy bills from a brand new energy efficient boiler. A boiler is one of the major contributors to your energy bill, The Energy Savings Trust back this up by saying that up to 40% of your energy bill is made up by your boiler. Now when you consider that an older boiler could be wasting you money, that is a lot of money. But how much difference can a new replacement boiler make? Well the energy saving trust also found that a new A rated boiler is around 35% more effective than an older G rated boiler. This is mainly because newer boilers are now self-condensing units, meaning they feed its emissions back into the heating systems. With this level of saving you can easily repay the cost of your new replacement boiler in nine years, based on an averaged combination boiler installation. Nine years is not a long time at all in boiler years and any savings made after this is money in the bank.
Is there any legal restrictions on boiler installations?
There are, ever since the 2005 building regulations boiler installations must be conducted in a certain manner. All engineers must be fully certified and boilers must adhere to the gas safe guidelines. It also restricts the location that a boiler can be installed, as it is no longer acceptable to install a boiler onto the floor. It has also banned the installation of any boiler that is not a condensing unit. This was done to cut down emissions as condensing boiler recycle any emissions back into the system and not the atmosphere. You can read the full guidelines for yourself here: 2005 Building Regulations. But do not worry if all of that goes over your head. This is because Go Heating Repair Wisbeach have got the regulations memorised, in fact all of us know it better than the back of our hands. Now as for the restriction limiting condensing boilers, this doesn’t leave you without choice as condensing units come in three main varieties.
So what are the difference between types of boilers?
Well there are three main boilers to choose from and one type of boiler to watch out for:
Combination Boiler or ‘Combi’ Boiler
As you can probably guess, a combination boiler provides both heating and hot water on demand, making it a very energy efficient boiler as it’s a single unit. As a new combi boiler will heat the hot water instantly when you turn the hot water tap on, you won’t need a hot-water or cold-water storage tank, which can be a real space saver as well as a more efficient way of heating your home. It also means there less chance of any pipes freezing on the loft if you’ve got a cold water storage tank.
The added benefit of a new combination boiler is that the hot water is delivered at mains pressure, so you should get a nice powerful shower without the need for a separate pump/pressure shower.
The downside of a new combination boiler is the they are really only suitable for smaller properties. Larger houses and properties with more than one bathroom, a system boiler will be required.
Whilst a System Boiler requires a hot water storage cylinder, all the major heating and hot water components are situated within the boiler itself, meaning they are quicker and easier to install.
A system boiler will provide a constant supply of hot water, meaning you don’t have a slight delay in hot water coming through like you do with a Combination boiler as the system boiler has already heated the water. Although a system boiler does need a hot water storage cylinder, it doesn’t have to be positioned in the loft and can easily be installed in a airing cupboard, making it an ideal cupboard to dry clothes.
These boilers are also compatible with solar water heating systems, which can save you money on your heating bills by heating your water with the power of the sun.
Heat boilers are the largest of the three usual residential boilers. They are the polar opposite off combination boilers as they only do one job and that is to heat the central heating only. Hence their name: heat only. But what about you hot water? This is heated within a separate hot water storage tank. This does add the extra installation of a hot water storage tank, but to work efficiently a cold water and feed expansion tank will also need to be installed within the system. Although this adds to the costs of the installation, it does mean you always have a large tank of hot water ready when you need it. This is perfect for properties with several bathrooms that may need hot water at the same time, so no need to queue for the bathroom in the morning.
Heat only boilers are the biggest boilers and also the most expensive to install. They are perfect for large properties, but a lot of Go Heating Repair Wisbeach’s customers with average homes also ask for a heat only boiler. Some people have a very old pipe and radiator system and these systems are not compatible with system or combination boilers. If you were to put a new boiler with an older heating system you could end up with loose pressure within your system which will stop your system from running. Instead some customers choose to have a heat only boiler that is compatible. The problem is that the boiler may be bigger than necessary which means they will be spending more in the long term. In these cases Go Heating Repair Wisbeach recommend having the entire system replaced, it’s more expensive in the short term, but you’ll benefit in the long run.
So that’s the three boilers that are open to you, but there is a forth boiler. This boiler won’t be offered to you, but you may have it in your home.
This boiler is a back boiler and it is becoming less common in people’s homes. This is because the installation of back boilers was restricted by the building regulations of 2005. This was after they were found to be inefficient, outdated and potentially hazardous. The main reason for this was the difficulty of access because of their installation location. As there name suggests back boilers are installed on the back of something, usually a fire place or gas fire. This means that they are difficult to get to in order to fix or even notice an issue. This particularly becomes a problem if they begin to leak gas. If you believe your property still has a back boiler it is recommended that you give Go Heating Repair Wisbeach a call.
These boilers were phased out mainly due to the fact that they were hard to access in case they needed repairs and that signs of fault, especially gas leaks, were harder to notice. Instead of having a back boiler installed, Go Heating Repair Wisbeach recommends having a combination boiler installed instead. This is because combination boilers are still smaller than average boilers and can be installed easily in a small cupboard in the kitchen.
So once I’ve picked the type of boiler am I all done?
Unfortunately not, because you still need to pick what size boiler you want and what brand too. Boiler size is very important to ensuring your new boiler is strong enough to heat your home without it wasting too much energy doing so. The size of a boiler is measured in it’s power. The power is measured in Kilowatts, or KW, with small boilers being around 24KW and very large boilers being up to 86KW. Once again the price of your new replacement boiler can change depending on what size of boiler you choose, a smaller 30KW boiler is going to cost you a lot less than a 76KW boiler. But you shouldn’t decide solely on the price as you’ll end up with an ineffectual boiler. With such a large difference in KW how do you pick the right boiler for your property? Well the correct way to pick the right size for your property is by using a formula for doing so. His formula takes into account the size and fixtures in your home and pairs it with the correct size. Don’t worry if you were no good at math because there are some great online calculators to help you. This is a brilliant calculator from The Institute of Domestic Engineers. If you still don’t want to leave working the boiler size out to chance the you can always rely on Go Heating Repair Wisbeach. Every one of our engineers have been using the formula so long that they can work out the power size for a property in their sleep. We like to make things as simple as possible for you after all.
What about boiler brands how do I pick?
Well by picking the type and size of boiler will cut down your brand choice a bit, but there is a right and a wrong way to choose the boiler’s brand. The wrong way is to simple base it on costs and go for the cheapest around, this could leave you with a boiler that breaks down often and ends up costing more than a branded boiler would have. It could also leave you in danger as some unregistered boilers are downright dangerous. Thankfully Go Heating Repair Wisbeach will refuse to install any boiler that could potentially cause you damage. The way to pick a boiler is to decide on your intentions for your property. A good brand of boiler can provide two things: an increase in property value and reassurance that the boiler will run well for a long time. These are great for those who are staying in the property for years to come and want reassurance that they will not need a new replacement boiler soon and those looking to increase the propertie’s value. If however you do not care for the property value, nor mind the fact that you may need to make repairs within the first five years of it’s life you can go for a middle of the road boiler. This is better if you supplement it with some kind of home repair plan, like Go Heating Repair Wisbeach’s complete cover plan.
Whether you choose Go Heating Repair Wisbeach or not, you should always have the final say in what brand of boiler you want installed. But you should be aware that most boiler engineers have their favourite brands, these are usually the boilers that they can get at a better price and therefore also have more experience in installing. However you should never feel pressurised into choosing a boiler brand that you don’t want.
The best way to find out about the different boiler brands is by consulting an impartial body like Which? They have produced a brilliant guide to different boiler brands that lists the best available brands in the UK. They rate them based on their reliability and energy efficient rating. At the top is Worcester Bosch which is one of the best brands around, but they are also the most expensive around too.
We do recommend Viessmann Boilers because they are in the Which? top three of best boiler brands, are German engineered for reliability and are cheaper than Worcester Bosch. We find that less than 1% of customers call us back within five years with a fault with the Viessmann, because it is so well engineered.
Of course, at Go Heating Repair Wisbeach, we can fit whatever boiler manufacture you want. But do try and avoid anything not made in the UK as Which? have marked some foreign manufacturers, particularly Italian-made boilers, down on reliability. So they might be cheap, but they do breakdown often, costing you more in the long run.
How long a guarantee should I go for?
Guarantess aren’t really something you can choose the details of. Often they come automatically with the unit and the manufacturer sets the length of the guarantee. The longest available is around ten years, but this is reserved for the top of the line models. Another point to bear in mind is that a manufacturer’s guarantee will only cover the repairs needed on the boiler unit itself and not the entire heating system. To have cover for the entire system you may be better having a complete cover plan. Go Heating Repair Wisbeach offers such a plan, where on yearly payment can cover any and all repairs needed to the system for a year.

Your Panic is Over – Things to check when you’re having your new boiler survey completed.
Whenever you planning to have a replacement boiler, always have a survey completed prior to the engineer giving you a price. Without seeing the property and the existing boiler, its very hard to come up with an accurate price and there is a strong likelihood that the quote won’t include everything you need for a successful boiler installation. When you’re having the survey completed, we’d always recommend you check and ask the following things with the surveyor:
Get Your Gas Pressure Checked
It is always recommended that you have your boiler pressure regularily checked in the week running up to your new replacement boiler installation. This is because the pressure needs to be stable at the time of installation. If the pressure is found to be too high or low then it cannot take place until it is normal again. The sooner you notice this the better the chances that it’ll be normal by the time of your install. Ask Go Heating Repair Wisbeach foradvice in checking your pressure and keeping it at a correct level.
Do you want the boiler moved to a different location?
Having a new replacement boiler installed is a great time to have it moved to another location. Just ask your Go Heating Repair Wisbeach surveyor if you would like this option. This may increase the costs of your installation, but in most cases this won’t be too noticeable.
Do you need to consider replacing the pipes and radiators?
This may be something that you need to consider if you are looking to have a combination or system boiler installed. This is because older pipes and radiators are not compatible with these types of boilers. If installed improperly the new boilers will operate at higher temperatures than the pipes can cope with leading to loose pressure in the pipes. Your boiler survey will highlight these points and go into detail as to the options for you. The first option will be to have the whole system replaced with a newer, more efficient system. This is a big job and can be expensive, but it will give you a reliable system and it is unlikely it will need updating again for a very long time. The second option is choosing a heat only boiler, which are compatible with older systems. This may be cheaper in the short term, but the system will still not be efficient and you’ll lose money in the long run.
Do you need an extra radiator in the airing-cupboard?
A lot of our customers rely upon a warm airing cupboard to dry their damp clothes. Unfortunately a bi-product of a more efficient boiler is that they do not give off as much heat, which can be a problem for your airing cupboard. To help with this Go Heating Repair Wisbeach can install a small radiator to warm your airing cupboard once more. It is small details like this that show that Go Heating Repair Wisbeach cares about their customers and will go that extra mile to ensure that they are completely satisfied.
Are there any building regulations to consider?
Building regulations and legislation have changed meaning that if you boiler was installed sometime ago, its likely not to meet current standards. For example, if your boiler is mounted in the centre of the house with the flue going up the chimney, this no longer meets the regulations, and as such the boiler will need a new position on an external facing wall.
Make sure you use a Gas Safe Engineer
Any new replacement gas boiler can only be fitted and installed by a Gas Safe engineer. All Go Heating Repair Wisbeach’s engineers are Gas Safe approved, our Gas Safe Registration number being 573627. You can check if someone is Gas Safe registered by asking for their Gas Safe registration number, and then visiting the Gas Safe website and to check their registration number if current.
