“I never imagined in my wildest dreams that our new boiler would be as fantastic as this!”

– said almost all our Go Heating Repair customers…
just after we completed their new boiler install in Macclesfield!

But where do you start when you need a new boiler in Macclesfield? We’ve put together this guide to help you make the right choice of boiler and installation company in Macclesfield for you

What’s the real cost of replacing a boiler?

This is the first thing customers want to know about potentially having a new replacement boiler installed, but it really isn’t a simple answer. And unfortunately a lot of our customers worry themselves about the prices they see online. Just like with looking up medical systems, you won’t get a real answer online and could end up confusing yourself. It is much better to get an answer in person by seeing a professional. Go Heating Repair Macclesfield is more than happy to send Liam, our surveyor, to conduct a survey on your property to get an accurate quote that will stay true throughout your installation.

The reason it needs to be in person is because most the price is dependent upon your property. The difference between a quote of £1500 and £3700 is your property size and what fixtures you have currently. A small one bedroom flat with a single bathroom and six radiators is likely to be much cheaper than a four bedroom house with two bathrooms and fifteen radiators. When Liam conducts your survey he will assess the amount of work needed and your potential options for new boiler. Once he has these details he can give you the quote you need in order to decide what to do next.

Once you’ve got this quote you will feel much better as you’ll have a definite answer and know that your installation is in good hands. We know in some cases it can still seem like a massive investment, but we have a silver lining for you. A new boiler will be much more efficient than your existing unit, potentially saving you half the energy that you’re currently using, and this saving will be apparent on your bills. It is very possible that through the potential savings your new boiler or heating system can pay for itself. A lot of our customers have a deep sense of relief after hearing this news.

When do you know you boiler needs replacing?

There is no sure fire way for the average customer to know when their boiler may fail. This is because you really need to be a trained technician with many years of experience before you can begin to spot the warning signs. We find that the average customer doesn’t know there is a problem until the boiler has completely failed. This isn’t a good thing as not only will it leave you without heating and hot water, but also a large repair bill that you weren’t expecting.

A better way to keep an eye on your boiler is by having surveys conducted on it regularly (every six months is best, but yearly is enough. Go Heating Repair Macclesfield is always happy to provide this service and our expert surveyor will be around to do a diagnostic on your boiler. With this you’ll know what shape your boiler is in. Below is some of our terms for boilers which we have explained for you:

Your boiler is beyond economical repair: If a technician tells you your boiler is beyond economic repair he is letting you know that he believes that repairing your existing boiler may cost you more than having a whole new replacement. It doesn’t mean that it needs replacing urgently, but that the boiler is past its prime and will require more frequent and expensive repairs. It is a sign that your boiler isn’t going to be able to run for long and that you may be best to have a new boiler installed, however Go Heating Repair Macclesfield will always leave this up to you.

Are you getting a ‘boiler dry-cycle’: If a boiler has been installed in a colder area of your home it may be prone to having boiler dry cycles. This is where your boiler fails to read the properties temperature properly and begins heating even when the house is warm enough. This as the name suggests begins a cycle and it can happen many times in a single day. To save the wasted energy it may be necessary for a new boiler unit be installed, in most cases this would be a simple swap and ensuring the new one takes the temperature reading from the house and not the install site.

If your boiler has a continuous pilot light: Older boilers required a lit flame to heat them up when they were needed. To provide this there needs to be a constant gas supply to the flame. Whilst this is a requirement of older boilers it is still a waste of resources and can add to your energy bill. Whilst a replacement isn’t urgent it is recommended so that you can save money on your bills.

Floor mounted boilers are old School: If your boiler is mounted on the floor, its likely to be very old and inefficient. A wall mounted replacement boiler will be more efficient.

Extensions and Renovations: If you making changes to your property, changing your boiler change also add to the value of your property.

Will I really get back the cost of the replacement boiler from savings on my energy bill?

A lot of our customers like to know more about this point, specifically how long it takes for the boiler to repay for itself. Well you’ll be glad to know that with the savings new boilers can make it doesn’t take long. A big reason for this is because all new boilers are condensing units. This means that they recycle any emissions back into the heating system, as well as other efficiency fixes not present ion older models. Due to these features The Energy Savings Trust believe that newer boilers are as much as 33% more efficient than older models. This only increases if your existing boiler is even older than twelve years old. That 33% is a big chunk of each energy bill saved and it all adds up. fFrom this level of savings Go Heating Repair Macclesfield believes that your new boiler will have been paid back within eight years. Considering that the average lifespan of a new boiler is way past this those eight years doesn’t seem long at all.

What does the law say I need fitted?

To ensure that every boiler installed is safe and fit for use the government created the 2005 Building Regulations. This outlines the accepted practices and models of boiler for the UK. Any new boiler must be a condensing unit (one that recycles it’s emissions) and be installed by a certified engineer. Go Heating Repair Macclesfield is always compliant with the 2005 building regulations and will always do what is best for you, so please rest assured you’re in good hands when you choose us.

What Type of Boiler do I need fitted?

There are a choice of four main boiler types that you can have fitted, dependent on your property:

Combination Boiler or ‘Combi’ Boiler

It says it all on the tin with these boilers. They combine all of the possible functions of a boiler into a single unit which can heat your home and your cold water to hot. Due to their ease of installation they are one of the quickest and cheapest boilers to choose and they do not need any additional water storage tanks for either hot or cold water. This also means that they can save you a lot of cupboard space and most of the time a combination boiler will be installed within a small cupboard in your kitchen.

There are a couple of added benefits to having your cold water heated to hot. Firstly it can decrease you chances of having pipes freezing in the winter and bursting. And secondly it also means that your hot water has the same pressure as your codl water, giving you nice hot powerful showers whenever you want them.

The only real disadvantage of combination boilers is that their size makes them only appropriate for smaller properties. Anything with more than one bathroom or seven radiators and you may need something bigger. However your surveyor will talk this through with you when needed.

System Boiler

If your home is too large for a combination boiler then a system boiler may be your best option. The main difference between them is that a system boiler heats water before you need it and stores it in a hot water storage cylinder. Other than this cylinder they are just as easy to install as a combination boiler.

Because it has hot water in reserve a system boiler can always provide hot water without the need to wait for the cold water to heat up. The hot water storage cylinder itself can be situated alongside the boiler to save space in a spare airing cupboard. This does give a nice little advantage as it will heat the cupboard providing a space to dry clothes within.

System boilers can provide your further savings when coupled with solar panels, which they are compatible with. This would allow your home to be heated by the sun’s rays and save you a lot more money on bills.

Heat Only Boilers – also known as Regular, Conventional or Open Vent Boilers

These are the big daddies of boilers, which also makes them one of the most expensive. The reason for this is due to the amount of extra installation needed. To function as a complete system a heat only boiler needs to have both a hot and cold water storage tank installed, as well as a feed expansion tank (all usually installed in an attic or loft). This is because the boiler unit itself only heats the central heating and not the water supply. This level of work is why they are the most expensive and space heavy.

So you may wonder why anyone would choose to have a heat only boiler installed. Well for starters they are excellent at heating a large property with more than three bath rooms and can keep this house hold in hot water too, no matter how many people living there. Secondly they may be the only choice for customers with older pipe work that don’t want to have their whole system replaced. A lot of Go Heating Repair Macclesfield’s customers choose heat only boilers for this reason, as they want a boiler that is compatible with their pipe work. If they chose a boiler that worked on a higher pressure it could stop the system working effectively. We wouldn’t recommend this ourselves as you still have an inefficient system of pipes and radiators. And whilst replacing the whole system is more expensive it could pay off in the long run in energy bill savings.

Back Boiler

Back boilers are no longer an option for customers due to the restrictions on their installation in the building regulations of 2005. These boilers have been restricted due to the inefficiency and because of the possible dangers. This type of boiler used to be installed within the walls of a property usually behind a gas fire or in a fireplace. This was often done when no other site was available.

A lot of these have been phased out since the Building Regulations change in 2005 came into effect for energy efficient condensing boilers – at Go Heating Repair we usually recommend that you replace a back boiler with a modern, energy efficient combi boiler.

What Size of New Boiler Do I Need?

In the very early stages, we suggest that you establish the power you need your new boiler to be. A boiler that produces 24KW is much cheaper than one that produces 34KW to buy and install, but if your boiler can’t produce enough heat, you won’t have a warm home. This can be a key differential in the quotes you might receive; a smaller Kilo-Watt boiler will be cheaper to install, but might cost you more in the long run in parts as it struggles to heat the property. Likewise, too big a Kilo-Watt boiler will run ineffeicnetly and cost you more money on your energy bills. The Institute of Domestic Engineers has a good online calculator that can workout what size boiler you need. Or you could ask the Go Heating Repair Macclesfield surveyor when they visit as they’ll be using a similar formula to calculate the size of the boiler you’ll need.

What’s the Best New Boiler Brand to Go For?

It really does depend on the type of boiler you are having installed and how long you are planning to stay in the property before any brand of new boiler can be recommended. If you are only going to be in the property for a year or so, cheap and cheerful might be the right choice. But if you are looking to invest in your property and be there for the years to come, at Go Heating Repair Macclesfield, we do recommend you have a well-known brand of boiler with a long guarantee fitted.

Most boiler installers will have their favourite brand; the one they like to fit the most because of the price they buy it at and the ease of installing some new boiler brands over others.

Which? produce a great boiler guide that is nationally recognized as being one of the best. Whilst they recommend Worcester Bosch as their number one brand, they are pricey and can bump up the cost of a boiler installation by several hundred pounds. But they are very reliable and efficient.

We do recommend Viessmann Boilers because they are in the Which? top three of best boiler brands, are German engineered for reliability and are cheaper than Worcester Bosch. We find that less than 1% of customers call us back within five years with a fault with the Viessmann, because it is so well engineered.

Of course, at Go Heating Repair Macclesfield, we can fit whatever boiler manufacture you want. But do try and avoid anything not made in the UK as Which? have marked some foreign manufacturers, particularly Italian-made boilers, down on reliability. So they might be cheap, but they do breakdown often, costing you more in the long run.

How long a guarantee should I go for?

The longest one you can get – most customers want a 10-year guarantee, but often only the most expensive boilers and brands offer such a long guarantee. Do remember that a boiler manufacturers guarantee only covers the boiler itself and not the controls or heating system. Our boiler cover plan is ideal as this covers any failure with the complete heating system, including controls, pipework and radiators.

Your Panic is Over – Things to check when you’re having your new boiler survey completed.

Whenever you planning to have a replacement boiler, always have a survey completed prior to the engineer giving you a price. Without seeing the property and the existing boiler, its very hard to come up with an accurate price and there is a strong likelihood that the quote won’t include everything you need for a successful boiler installation. When you’re having the survey completed, we’d always recommend you check and ask the following things with the surveyor:

Get Your Gas Pressure Checked

Always get the gas pressure to the existing boiler measured to make sure its not low. If the gas pressure is low, some boiler installers may not want to carry out the replacement boiler works until the gas pressure is fixed.

Do you want the boiler moved to a different location?

When replacing your boiler, you can choose to have it located anywhere in the house, although this might add to the cost.

Do you need to consider replacing the pipes and radiators?

If a very old boiler is being replaced for a new energy efficient boiler, you’ll find the newer boiler might generate more pressure in the system. This is often where a new boiler can fail – driving more pressure through the old pipes and radiators can cause problems in the piping and leading the new boiler to loose pressure. Always check with whomever you get to survey for the new boiler and ask their opinion as to what is the best solution.

Do you need an extra radiator in the airing-cupboard?

One thing to look out for when replacing your old boiler for a new energy efficient boiler, is that it will give off less heat. This is particularly important to consider if your boiler is in an airing cupboard and your dry clothes in that area – the new energy efficient boiler might not generate the same level of heat in the airing cupboard and you may want to have a radiator installed in the cupboard just to be sure.

Are there any building regulations to consider?

Building regulations and legislation have changed meaning that if you boiler was installed sometime ago, its likely not to meet current standards. For example, if your boiler is mounted in the centre of the house with the flue going up the chimney, this no longer meets the regulations, and as such the boiler will need a new position on an external facing wall.

Make sure you use a Gas Safe Engineer

Any new replacement gas boiler can only be fitted and installed by a Gas Safe engineer. All Go Heating Repair Macclesfield’s engineers are Gas Safe approved, our Gas Safe Registration number being 573627. You can check if someone is Gas Safe registered by asking for their Gas Safe registration number, and then visiting the Gas Safe website and to check their registration number if current.
